My experience with SURGE since January 2021 has definitely been great, and am truly seeing results with my trainer Benny!I had PTs before joining SURGE, both physical and online. Though I see results with them, the results are simply not sustainable. I work in a high-pressure environment and the methods prescribed then were taking a toll on my mental health. I have to go on extreme caloric deficit (as low as 1200 calories for a 25-year-old male) and count my macros. Instead of fitness integrating into my lifestyle, it’s more of upheaving my lifestyle to fit fitness into it. It’s just simply a no-go for me. I was moody and found it a chore every time I head to the gym.With losing my dad and the lockdown in 2020, I was stress eating a lot even though I wasn’t hungry, and I gained about 14kg (from 70kg to 84kg) I would say it’s one of the lowest points in my life. I could no longer fit into the clothes I used to wear and had to get a new wardrobe. I was no longer able to put on my favorite outfit when I go out with friends. It was just a simple T-shirt and jeans, and they were the only outfit that I can wear then.I told myself I had to do something. Even though I had prior resistance training experience, I felt that I needed a trainer to get me back on my feet. I was hunting for a few PT services before landing on SURGE.All the PTs that I shopped around seemed to give cookie-cutter answers about my situation. Nothing seems worth the price nor provides the most bang for the buck. However, during my consultation with SURGE co-founder Sam, he understands my situation and assured me that they are different from the other PTs out there and focus on making fitness sustainable. Shout out to Adolphus from Surge Gym who has literally transformed me. Prior to November this year, I was still terribly overweight and suffering from certain medical problems like frozen shoulder, swollen ankles and tightness at the right hip joint. I am happy to share that my ankles have ceased to be swollen and my shoulder/hip pain has eased tremendously.I signed up 20 sessions and began training with some scepticism about effectiveness of body-building sessions in helping me control my weight and alleviate joint pain. However, after 8 weeks of training, here I am testifying that my doubts were unfounded. Sam (founder of the gym) suggested 2 potential coaches in the beginning and I chose Adolphus as my personal fitness coach because he had prior experience helping clients with weight loss/control. Meeting him for the first time, I noticed that he has a very calming voice and demeanour that immediately puts me at ease. I also found his training plan achievable and his instructions easy to follow.During the training, Adolphus tries to explain which muscle groups a particular exercise targets and how it helps me to reach my goals (e.g. strengthening). His catch phrase “easy-peasy” also reassures me that I can manage with the exercises like goblet squats, standing lunges and bench-presses to name a few. He makes an effort to communicate regularly with me (via Whatsapp) and monitors my diet by advising me what to eat and what to avoid. As a personal fitness coach, Adolphus ensures that correct postures are maintained throughout training and this has helped me avoid potential injuries.Over the weeks, I followed the diet plan drawn up by Adolphus and slowly changed from a person who consumed large quantities of carbohydrates (I love my pastas, rice, muffins etc) to one who prefers healthier alternatives (I am now cooking my own meals using ingredients like cauliflower, broccoli and carrots) making weight loss much easier. The location is convenient since it's near my office, and, because they are under the same group as Core Collective, I am able to go to their branch in Dempsey which is nearer to home.
